With TN engineering counselling underway for the last twenty days, this year started new engineering branches like Industrial Engineering and Management, Material Science and Technology and last year started Mechanical Engineering & Automation and Textiles Fashion Technology have failed to attract a single student, says Education Analyst, Prof. Moorthy.
Starting from, July 13, so far( as on August 1), 49309 students have been provided with an engineering seat.
Prof. Moorthy recounts, less awareness about the job opportunities of the new branches as the reason for such a pathetic response from students and furthermore these courses are offered only by self financing colleges.
Apart from this, branches like Medical Electronics, Material Science and Engineering, Polymer Technology, Robotics and Automation and Textile Chemistry also seem to get poor response from the students.
Meanwhile, all counselling allotted seats have been filled in the branches like Industrial bio-technology, Metallurgical engineering, Mining engineering, Printing technology, Rubber and plastic technology, Leather technology, Chemical & Electro chemical Engineering, Apparel technology, Ceramic technology & Agriculture and irrigation engineering. Students seem to have trust on branches offered by government engineering colleges, says Moorthy.
Civil Engineering branch is the highlight of all branches with less admission percentage as against 19 other branches like Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Computer science Engineering.
Branches like Production Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Bio-Technology have received more positive students response form the students with the seats admission strength of around 60%.
