Delay in counselling date for lateral entry leaves students in a state of confusion

Updated on: Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Despite the classes for second year engineering students having commenced a month ago, counselling date for lateral entry is yet to be announced. This has left over 30,000 students in a state of confusion.

More than 550 Engineering colleges and 250 Polytechnic colleges are functioning in Tamil Nadu.

Students successfully completing polytechnic studies are eligible to join Engineering porgrammes directly to the second year through 'Lateral Entry'. Until last year, 10 per cent seats were allotted for lateral entry students. However, this allotment has been increased to 20 per cent.

Consequently, there are over 40,000 seats in the offer at the 550 odd Engineering colleges in Tami Nadu. Roughly, 30,000 students are expected to join through Govt. quota.

Even as the polytechnic results have been released long back, so far no official announcement has come out regarding the counselling date through lateral entry.

With classes for second year students having already commenced a month ago, students joining through lateral will have to take up classes along with previous second year students after the counselling. By the time, semester exams would also close in, forcing lateral entry students to perform poorly in the exams.

Hence, demand for swift conduct of 'lateral entry' counselling is rising.
