IIT Bombay emerges as the first choice of top candidates

Computer Science Engineering at IIT Bombay emerged as the first choice of top candidates and majority of the top 100 rankers were admitted in the institution in the first round of course allotment for IIT-JEE 2012 that were announced on Monday.

According to G.B.Reddy, Organising Chairman, IIT-JEE 2012 the first choice Institute among the 100 Candidates in the common rank list 86 preferred IIT Bombay, 12 preferred IIT Delhi and one each preferred IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. However, 77 out of the top 100 got admitted into IIT Bombay, 19 preferred IIT Delhi, 3 preferred IIT Kanpur and one candidate got into IIT Madras.

A total of 17,465 candidates were short-listed for counselling of whom 15,989 registered. In comparison, the number of candidates selected for counselling in IIT JEE-2011 was 13,197. In the first round of seat allocation 9,500 candidates including 11 foreign nationals were allotted seats and 6,479 candidates did not get any seat due to various reasons.

Most female candidates in a single course were nine in Computer Science and Engineering in IIT Bombay followed by eight in Computer Science and Engineering in IIT Roorkee, seven in Chemical Engineering in IIT Delhi  and six in Electrical Engineering in IIT Kanpur. Among the top 45 girl candidates in the common rank list 13 were admitted in IIT Bombay, 10 in IIT Delhi, nine in IIT Kanpur, eight in IIT Roorkee and five in IIT Madras.

Computer Science and Engineering in IIT Bombay was the first choice of largest number of candidates (4406) followed by Computer Science and Engineering in IIT Delhi (1082), Electrical Engineering in IIT Bombay (1016), Mechanical Engineering in IIT Bombay (874) and Aerospace Engineering in IIT Bombay (539).

Prof. Reddy said 668 candidates got the course and the institute of their first choice, 390 candidates got the course and the institute of their second choice and 379 candidates got the course and the institute of their third choice. No OBC seat and SC seat were left unfilled.

He said 907 (9.55%) female candidates got the admission offer and the include General Category (447), OBC category (222), SC category (154) and ST category (84).

Candidates allotted the seats have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 40,000 (for GE/OBC) and Rs. 20,000 (for SC/ST) to accept the allotment and be considered for an upgradation, if possible, in the subsequent rounds of counselling. Payments have to be made at any branch of State Bank of India with printed challan available from the IIT-JEE 2012 counselling website ‘’

“Those who fail to pay the fees on or before June 22 will be considered as a refusal of the offer of admission. In spite of some delay in releasing the first round seat allocation admission offers, candidates must note that there will not be any change in the already announced counselling schedule,” Prof. Reddy said.
