As thousands of seats go vacant in Tier 11 and Tier III private engineering colleges in the state every year a few college managements have begun approaching schools to convince toppers to join their college for a nominal fees.
Prabhu, a student of Avadi who secured 1,050 marks in Plus-2, said staff of a private engineering college in the city had telephoned his father to inform about the facilities available in their college and requested him to admit his ward in their college.
“We were surprised when the college offered me a seat without any capitation and minimum fees. We have sought time till government’s counselling ends so that I can join the college if I don’t get a seat in a decent course,” he said.
In another case, a private engineering college had sent SMSes to prospective students with the database provided by the school.
“The college sent its website address and contact details with its fees structure asking me to consider their college for admission. The fees they mentioned too was just Rs 32,500, “ another student Saravanan said.
One of the school administrators on condition of anonymity said some private engineering colleges do approach them for students’ database.
“We don’t provide the database as it is illegal but we are not sure if other schools follow our policy,” the administrator said.
