A bill to provide reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs under state seats in central education institutes in tribal areas was moved in the Rajya Sabha by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
Moving the amendments to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006, Sibal said, "The two key amendments are to bring the element of equity in central education institutes."
He said the amendment has been proposed to include reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in tribal areas, especially in North East region.
The amendment also aims to increase the time-frame for full implementation of the Act to six years till 2014 instead of three years, he said.
Initiating the debate on the bill, Anil Madhav Dave (BJP) opposed the amendments saying, "We are trying to correct that type of education which cannot be corrected. It needs to be overhauled."
Stating that some states in the country were worse than the North East region, he suggested that the government should give special focus on tribal areas of Bihar, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.
Jesudasu Seelam (Cong) sought a separate bill to provide reservation in private education institutions.
