In an effort to put an end to all confusion and apprehension, the school education department has directed the schools to start the admission process only in May.
Handing over circulars and a copy of the government order detailing the instructions at a meeting of school heads on Jan 12, the joint director of matriculation schools directed schools to reserve about 25% of seats in LKG for students from disadvantaged and weaker sections of society.
However, school heads said that they would make a representation requesting the department to allow them to reserve 25% of the seats in May, while finishing admissions for the remaining 75% now.
Principal of Zion Group of Schools, N Vijayan told "Schools are clear about reserving 25% of the seats for children from poor socio-economic backgrounds. But we have to face lot of administrative problems if the admission process for the remaining 75% of the seats starts in May".
Representative from schools said that even printers, some as far as Sivakasi, preferred to take the order for school stationery materials three months in advance and most parents would feel more at ease if their child gets a seat before the summer vacation. Furthermore, with teachers away during summer vacations, schools will run short of staffs to handle the admission process.
One head of school justified starting the admission process for the 25% seats in May would makes sense as it will give enough for parents to get the required documents, including income, caste or medical certificates.
Expressing apprehension over the fact that the government had not so far mentioned how and when the fee for students admitted in the 25% reserved seats would be reimbursed, a principal of a school said that unless the reimbursement is done within a week or month, it would be difficult for the school to pay salaries to teachers.
