Navodaya Vidyalaya selection test

The Central Board of Secondary Education has invited applications for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya selection test to be held on February 12 for admission to class six.

In Kerala, every district has one vidyalaya. At present, 595 of these schools function across the country. Eighty students are selected for every school.

The main objective of these schools is to provide quality education to talented children even from rural areas.

The medium of instruction is the mother tongue or regional language up to class eight and thereafter English for maths and science and Hindi for social science. Tuition fee, boarding, lodging, uniforms, and textbooks are free.

However, a fee of Rs.200 will have to be paid every month from classes 9 to 12. Students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, girls, those physically challenged, and those from families below the poverty line are exempted from payment of the fee.

Applicants for admission to a school should be from the district where it is situated. They must be born between May 1, 1999 and April 30, 2003 and studying in class five during the academic session 2011-12. A second chance will not be provided to take the selection test.

At least 75 per cent of the seats in a district will be filled by candidates from rural areas.

The students seeking admission under the rural quota must have studied from class three in rural schools.

How to apply

Application forms and prospectus can be had free from the schools, the offices of the District Education Officer or the Deputy Director of Education or downloaded from www.navodaya.nic.in or www.navodayatrivandrum.gov.in. The filled applications will be received till October 31.

Admit cards, prepared by the Principal of the Vidyalaya, will be issued to the applicants. Those who do not receive these one week before the test should contact the Principal. Candidates should appear for the selection test at the examination centre allotted to them on the admit card. The language or medium of the examination for the candidate will be the medium of instruction of the student in class five.

The two-hour test will have three sections with 100 objective-type questions. Each question carries one mark. The questions assess mental ability, arithmetic skills, and language proficiency. For details, visit www.navodaya.nic.in.
