An autonomous institute of physics research located in India is known as Institute for Plasma Research (IPR). Today, Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) is playing a major role as a partnership in international fusion energy initiative.

An initiative was taken from the part of Government of India that was associated with Plasma Physics program where high temperature plasma which is magnetically confined. The Plasma Physics program is associated with an autonomous institute that deals with Plasma research and the department of science and technology. Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) deals with different experiments along with the team of scientist. The members as well as the scientist in the particular organization has made a decision about building up of super conducting steady state tokamak SST-1 of second generation. Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) had a rapid growth and is recognized as a proper centre for Plasma technology. In the year 1998, the organization has moved to another center which is located at Gandhinagar.

An important body associated with Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) is known as Facilitation centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies. This was a well known centre that was set up in the year 1997. This was basically laid down to foster, promote, demonstrate and develop plasma based which was industrially relevant. The role of this centre is to act as an interface between industries as well as institutes. Facilitation centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies has also developed R & D strength in order to get an expertise with regards to working in an industry. A recovery and remedial action from waste as well as energy products are utilized effectively by Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) to get plasma assisted metallization technologies. The role of melting and smelting is also connected with Institute for Plasma Research (IPR).
