National Institute of Technology (NITs) is well-known college for engineering and technology education in India. Initially NITs were known as Regional Engineering College (RECs), in 2002 the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) and the government of India decided to upgrade RECs as National Institute of Technology (NITs). They are the premier institutes of engineering and technology in India. Right now Courses offered at NIT are bachelors, masters and doctorate levels in various branches of engineering and technology. It was the dream of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru to see India as a leader in science and technology.
The 21st NIT is coming up at Imphal in the northern-eastern state of Manipur at an initial cost of Rs. 500 crores. At the time of REC the entire expenditure of post-graduation courses were borne by central government and the expenditure on undergraduate courses was shared between central and state government. After the upgradation to NIT, the entire expenditure of institutes is managed by central government.
Admission into NITs is done on the basis of merit list of Joint Entrance Examination (Main) (JEE).
