Indian statistical institutes (ISI)
Indian statistical institute is the unique Institute well known for research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences. ISI has gained the status of an institution of National importance by an act of the India parliament in 1959. It is the most prestigious and oldest institution focused on statistics. Indian statistical Institute (ISI) was established on 17th December, 1931 by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College, Kolkata.
Head quarters of ISI is located in northern fringe of the metropolis of Kolkata. It also has other four centres focused on academics located in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Tezpur. Primary activity of Indian statistical Institute is research in statistics. Teaching activities are undertaken mainly in Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore. Offices of the ISI are located in several other cities in India which are primarily engaged in projects and consultancy in Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research.
Objectives of Indian Statistical Institute:
The major objectives of the ISI are:
- To facilitate research and training of Statistics,
- To indulge in development of statistical theory and in application of statistical techniques � in the scenarios of planning at national level and in theoretical development of natural and social sciences,
- To participate in the process of data collection and analysis,
- To operate related projects in planning and improvement of efficiency of management and production.
