Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology, AVIT was established in the year 1998 as an affiliated institution under the University of Madras. It was later affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. In 2004, the institution was brought under the ambit of Vinayaka Missions University, Salem.
Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology encompasses a sprawling 48.7 acres campus with a built-up area of 5.65 lakhs sq.ft. AVIT is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution with the major programmes accredited by the NBA-AICTE. The college is committed to impart quality education to students from different socio-economic backgrounds. It offers under-graduate programmes in 14 different disciplines and five post-graduate programmes including the Master of Computer Applications and Master of Business Administration courses. It also offers part–time programmes in four undergraduate streams and four postgraduate streams.
The college is marked by its majestic buildings and has the best of infrastructure in its classrooms, digital classrooms and modern labs with state-of-the-art equipment. It has a central computing facility in addition to the computer facilities attached to each department and a well-stocked library with adequate textbooks, reference books and national and international journals. There are separate hostels for boys and girls; very comfortable, homely and conducive to study. The hostels have plush gyms separate for boys and girls. The college canteen boasts of a cuisine suited to the taste of both North Indian and South Indian students, vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The campus has broadband wi-fi connectivity enabling the students to access the internet 24 X 7. The management believes in the overall development of the students and hence encourages a host of co–curricular and extracurricular activities. The college has the best of facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports. The students are also urged to participate in and become members of professional societies for both students and staff. The professional society chapters in the college are the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), IEEE – Communication Society, IEEE - Computer Society, IEEE- Power and Energy Society, IEEE – Women In Engineering Society (IEEE – WIE), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Indian Institute of Production Engineers (IIPE), the Broadcasting Engineers Society of India (BES) and the Madras Metallurgical Society (MMS). In creating an awareness for and meeting the energy requirements of the nation, AVIT is very committed towards using renewable energy sources in the campus. The college has solar street lights, a windmill and biogas power plant. The power generated by these facilities is fully utilized by the college which has further plans to increase the generating capacity of the same.
