Education Details & Eligibility:
This course grew out of the concern felt by the occupational therapists working at Bethesda Hospital (Melbourne) in the early 1980s about their head-injured clients returning to driving. Assessment of the client's driving competence relied on the clinical assessments made by medical practitioners or ophthalmologists and the reports of on-road assessments conducted by driving instructors who, through years of experience of working with the disabled, had developed skills and knowledge in this area.
At that time, only the medical practitioners were legally authorised to make recommendations to the licensing authorities regarding the fitness of a person to drive if the person was deemed to have a disability which could affect their driving ability.
